Company made mistake with the salary of employees and now is asking the money back !

Hello,
I am working to the airport and we work shifts. Company in order to save staff it offered more money to those employees that will accept to work split shifts (instead of working e.g. 1400-2200 they work 0700-1100 and 1500-1900). Apparently they made a mistake and instead of paying e.g.10$ more for each split shift to employees, they paid 40$. Now after one and half year that they paid for the split shifts they "discovered" their mistake and stopped paying 40$ but only 10$ that was the correct amount according to their sayings.

The issue is that they now come and cut off from our salaries the extra money they gave us (by their own mistake) throughout this one and a half year.

Is that legal ? Can we do something about this? Because it's a respectable amount of money for us.
